Internet Security Threat Report

On April 12th Symantec has released its 2016 Internet Security Threat Report in which it suggests more than 500 million digital identities were stolen or exposed in 2015.
In addition, it said, fake technical support scams rose by 200 percent and crypto-based ransomware attacks grew by 35 percent.
Fake pop-up warnings on websites were being used by some groups to try to convince people their computer was riddled with viruses.
In 2015, there were nine breaches that exposed more than 10 million records. By contrast, in 2014 only four breaches were this severe. One breach, of US Voter registration records, saw information about 191 million people exposed online. Hospitals, healthcare firms and insurance companies suffered the largest number of breaches, said the report.

Mobiles: Smartphones are an increasingly attractive target for online criminals. As a result, they are investing in more sophisticated attacks that are effective at stealing valuable personal data or extorting money from victims. Although Android users remain the main target, 2015 saw effective attacks on Apple devices as well.

Web Threats: If web servers are vulnerable, then so are the websites they host and the people who visit them.
Social media, scams, and email threats social engineering rules: The sophistication and ruthlessness of some of the attacks and tactics used by cybercriminals in 2015 have demonstrated how vulnerable individuals are online and chipped away at public confidence in online security.

E-Crime: The underground economy is booming and cybercrime is growing fast, but as we have seen with the growing number of high-profile arrests and takedowns in 2015.
